A Shakespeare Festival just for High School Teens in Santa Fe
The 2018 Youth Shakespeare Festival Santa Fe was a tremendous success with nine schools in Santa Fe and Espanola participating, as well as an entry of students from Upstart Crows of Santa Fe. Participating this year are: Academy for Technology and the Classics, Capital High, Eldorado Community School, Mandela School, McCurdy School, New Mexico School for the Arts, Santa Fe High School, Santa Fe Indian School, and Santa Fe Prep.
Our 2018 visiting artists included Stage Fight Director Ambrose Ferber, New York actor, London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art trained Ariana Karp, and our special visiting guest artist this year is Ben Crystal. Students who were part of the program received free tickets to the International Shakespeare Center's production of King Lear at the Adobe Rose Theater, free tickets to Ben Crystal's public event in Santa Fe, and receive a special workshop in site-specific theater from Ariana Karp.
We’re looking forward to a vibrant 2019 Festival held at the Swan Theater in Santa Fe, with speeches and scenes from the entire Shakespeare canon.
Our Youth Shakespeare Festival trains teens to speak Shakespeare, use a sword,
dance a coranto, swear like an Elizabethan, fight like a villain,
and drink from tankards and flagons.
Students produce short scenes in a festival performance and in the process develop skills in critical thinking, close reading, literary analysis, public speaking, voice, stage combat, and Shakespearean staging.
Teachers: The Upstart Crows and their staff are always pleased to come to your school and present the program to you and your students. Festival programming is all-inclusive - you provide the students and the space, we will provide the staff and activities. We are happy to discuss support for English and Drama classes for any part of the school year.
